Feline hyperthyroidism
for veterinarians
What is hyperthyroidism?
The thyroid gland plays a fundamental role in producing thyroid hormones and is composed of two lobes located at the front of the neck, present in all mammals, both animals and humans. It is a superficial gland, easily palpable if it increases in size. Thyroid hormones regulate all aspects of metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is an endocrine disorder caused by an excess of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream.

Information required from attending veterinarians who wish to refer a hyperthyroid cat for Iodine 131 therapy:
Dear colleague, it is essential first to ensure that the patient is a suitable candidate for treatment with radioactive iodine. Therefore, it is very important that you send us the medical record. Only in exceptional cases can it be sent with the cat on the day of the appointment. Please remember that thiamazole (methimazole) must be discontinued at least 7 days before Iodine 131 therapy.
